Rarest of them all
1972 Sportster
XLA
 (Military Only)
$50,000 to $100,000 BIKE
These XLA bikes were different from the civilian bikes. They  came from Harley-Davidson with electric starts, large gas tanks (Turtle Tank) that had smooth                             sides and did not have the side brackets for the Harley-Davidson emblem. They came with Firestone tires, (Not Good-year) they had 16" rear wheels, rear                             fender rack, saddle bags, covered shock absorbers and windshield (available as an option on civilian models)  They also had wider set of handlebars                             (never offered on civilian bike and Solo seat only available on civilian model through 1970.  Harley-Davidson used the Solo seat on all the XLA's.
This is one of the last Military Motorcycles made for the Military. This may be the last one ever made. And, It may be the only one made for the U.S. Navy.                             Harley-Davidson made Military bikes through 1972.  It's believed that they made about 30 of them for 1972. They made only one for the Navy and this may                             or may not be that one.
have documention from Harley-Davidson Archive's department confirming that this IS one of the last ones made.  And 1972 IS the last year made.
Helpful Info;
From 1970 to 1980 Harley made six models.
Designated by their ID numbers.

7F XLCR
4D XLA
( XLA was sold ONLY to the U.S. Government.)
The XLA's for the U.S. Army came with all the standard "Chromed" parts but when the U.S. Navy order one they specify "NO Chrome" was told that                            after the expense Harley-Davidson went through to produce "Chrome free" bike, they decided it was too costly and discontinued the XLA's.                            From then-on they only make Police models that are also offered to the Military.
You can read some of the Sportster forums and some of the vintage Harleys forums where Mr. Expert says that 1965 was the last year for the XLA's.                            Some of these so-called experts say 1967 1969 1970 and so-on. There is even popular book called "Everything about Harley-Davidson's that says                            1973 was the last year XLA's were made.  When asked Mr. Price at Harley-Davidson about this, he said. "If Harley-Davidson made XLA's for 1973,                            Harley-Davidson doesn't know about it"
Again,  have written documentation from Harley-Davidson stating that the 1972 WAS the last year for the XLA's and this bike IS one of those bikes.
This bike just went through TOTAL restoration and mean TOTAL.  Every nut, bolt, washer, fitting, wire, gasket and every piece of the bike was restored                           to its original state. It took almost year and over $20,000 in parts alone not counting labor to complete this bike.
Every effort was taken to keep this bike 100% original.
(only exception was the Speedometer.  wanted it to remain original)
The motor was rebuilt from top to bottom and everything attached.  The clutch, transmission, cables, gears were rebuilt, replaced or refurbished as new.
THIS BIKE IS NOW MUSEUM QUALITY
The bike is AS-New but has NOT been started in order to keep it "indoor clean and odor free." It has not had gasoline inside the refurbished gas tank or                         oil in the motor. All engine lubrications, fittings, seals, ball-bearings are all lubricated but are all sealed and odor free.                        All the electricals work.  The brakes, levers, gears, lights, Everything works and are AS-New                       This bike is as it just came out of its original crate.
The Total restoration is so fresh that this bike has never touched the ground since.
This bike is probably the rarest Modern-Day motorcycle in existance. There may not be another one like this in the World.
VALUE
may sell it now for $50,000.  don't know.  am talking to Barrett-Jackson and Mecum Auction for their exclusive Monterey California auction that will                     only have 50 Motorcycles up for Auction. (not like Las Vegas where they have about 1000 bikes) Or may donate it to Navy or Military museum.
This bike is not for everyone. It's for that special collector who wants something so rare it cannot be duplicated. connouiseur, lover of finer things in life. Someone                    who is an artist at heart. You will know if that is you.
would like to give thanks and  recognition to some of the people and companies that helped in this restoration.
