WESELL WORLDWIDE
Late 1949 Harley Davidson FL (74 cu in)
Second Year Panhead, First Year Hydra Glide
Harley factory records state the company sold 12,685 new motorcycles in 1949.
The bike we're selling here today is late '49 model, vin 10,874. Harley introduced telescopic forks in 1949.
At this time in Harley's history, the OHV twins did not carry names, being or EL for 61 cu in and F, FL, or FS for 74 cu in. But sometime during the '49 season, the merchandising division decided to name the overhead valve models 'Hydra-Glide', celebrating the new 'fluid' forks, and began stamping the name into the front tins. Earlier '49s had no name stamped on these tins, but our late-model does indeed have 'Hydra-Glide' stamped into the front tins (just behind the headlight).

Several experts have verified this bike to be "Very Original".

The bike has been owned and ridden by two brothers since their father passed away. Our shop has been servicing the bike for the second brother for more than ten years. The current owner's recollection is that his father bought the bike in the late 70s or early 80s, and that the mileage is original and correct. He believes the engine has never been overhauled, and our shop has no reason to doubt this assumption. When the speedometer failed in 2011, personally sent the instrument to Palo Alto Speedometer Inc in California. This company is well known in the industry and they overhauled the speedometer leaving the original mileage on the odometer (26,660 miles at that time). The bike can be seen at Zap Leather and Cycle in Paynesville, MN, Mon-Sat 9am-8pm, Sundays and holidays 11am-6pm.
