I normally avoid exhaustive ad descriptions because people who buy these bikes typically know what they're looking at; however, old motorcycles in this condition rarely surface anymore, so this one deserves additional detail.
History
One day in the late 1960s, man rode this motorcycle into Ford dealership in rural southern Missouri and traded it in on new vehicle. The owner of the dealership decided to keep the bike as companion to his radial engine 1948 Cessna 195 airplane. The motorcycle was stored in the owner's hangar where it remained virtually untouched for the next 50 years.
Chassis
The most striking thing about this motorcycle is its originality there are very few reproduction or aftermarket parts on the bike. Even commonly worn and replaced original parts such as cables, wiring, floorboard mats, etc. remain intact. There is lot of factory CP hardware on the bike and other indicators that suggest the chassis likely stayed together since new. Additional factory original parts include:
Oil Tank Gas Tanks Crash Bars Handlebars Wheel HubsIgnition CoilChain Guard Transmission Inner Primary Cables/Wiring 32E Generator Ignition Switch Clutch Assembly Wishbone Frame Front Fender Lamp Front and Rear Fenders Rocker Clutch Assembly Delco-Remy Horn (works) Guide Tail Light HD Lens Footboards and Passenger Pegs Front and Rear Brake Assemblies Handlebar Switches and Controls Non-Safety Bead 16” Rims and Spokes Dash Cover (with glass indicator light lens) Front and Rear Fender Trim, Tips and Accessories Springer Front End Assembly (including the shock and rockers) Speedometer (with 1950s Becks blue lens to match the bike’s original color)
The saddle bags are original “King Size” bags (circa 1953 with red piping, chromed brass mounting plates, plastic backs and plain buckles). They are still soft and pliable, but seam under the lid on each bag needs to be re-stitched. The seat, outer primary, muffler, highway pegs, windshield and kicker pedal are OEM or accessory parts of the same era. The headlight is 1940-1947 Indian Motolamp model and the grips appear to be the Gran Turismo-style that were popular in the 1960s and 1970s.
Engine
The engine in this bike has perfect, matching 1948 FL cases with zero repair work. The cylinders, heads, rocker covers, carburetor (Linkert M35TP), air cleaner, cam cover, oil pump, circuit breaker, cut-out relay, etc. are original 1948 components. When found the bike, it had 1950 EL engine in it for some unexplained reason. spent months searching for complete, correct, unmolested 1948 engine and eventually located one for small fortune halfway across the country. Similar to the rest of the bike, the engine was also owned by the same man since the mid-1960s. He had it rebuilt in recent years, so was able to simply swap it with the other. then serviced the bike by changing all the fluids, lubricating the cables, adjusting the brakes, installing new battery and getting it roadworthy again.
Paint
The tanks and fenders on this bike were painted red prior to the late 1960s; however, the original blue paint is plainly visible in many areas where the red paint is beginning to release. I've had good luck revealing original paint on other antique motorcycles, but decided to let the next owner make the call on this one. The black paint on the frame and other components appears to be original.
