Moto Guzzi 850 T3
First registered July 1978. Historic vehicle status so tax and MoT exempt. Matching frame and engine numbers.
Not restored machine as such and therefore it has an honesty and originality about it. The bike was last MoTd in July 2018 when bought it. The mileage then was 46,142, it's now at 46,798.
I didn't expect to keep the bike for such short time or ride it so little but things change and needs must.
Like most Guzzis have owned it is an easy starter, willing and ready to go. Pulls like locomotive through the gears. Great soundtrack from Mistral silencers proper motorbike sound but not at all antisocial!
Its last owner had it for around ten years. He had several Italian bikes so used it sparingly. wad of MoTs bear this out and verifies the mileage.
He bought it as runner and undertook rolling restoration which he finished last year. Then he sold it, which is so often the way. In this case it was to fund the rebuilding Ducati 860GTS he'd had in shed for years. Restoring 1970s Ducatis is an expensive business!
The Guzzi was supplied new by Sports Motorcycles of Manchester which means it would no doubt have been in the workshop there at the same time as Mike Hailwood's TT-winning Ducati. link with motorcycling history!
I did few hundred miles on the bike at the back end of last summer and then had it serviced and the carbs overhauled with new internals. have barely ridden it this year, using my modern bike instead.
A look through the bike's history file shows expenditure running to several thousand pounds during its previous ownership. Parts were purchased from suppliers far and wide including Gutsibits., Moto Corsa, Mdina Italia and Eurobits in the UK; Speet and TLM in the Netherlands; Stein Dinse in Germany; and MG Cycle of Wisconsin USA.
There are also bills for shotblasting and painting work. The tank and side panels were repainted in 2011 and still look pretty much as good as new. new seat cover fitted to restored pan finishes off the bike's good looks. can vouch for its comfort on 100 mile run.
Some spares come with the bike including the original passenger grabrail which has nice chrome. As you can see on the pics useful rack sourced from Italy is fitted on the bike. Also included in the sale are spare brake disc and pair of original headlamp brackets. These need rechroming. The brackets on the bike are made by Tomaselli famous name of course. like them and if was keeping the bike wouldn't be in rush to swap them.
The bike's restoration included pair of Italian-made Mistral stainless steel silencers, Motobatt battery and complete rewire by Towzatronics in 2017. The bill for this for £550. Upgraded switchgear looks good and adds functionality and reliability. Electrics were never Guzzi strong point!
Any negatives? Well, the frame has not been repainted and the original paint has worn off here and there. It's not something that's particularly detrimental to the bike's overall appearance but it could be touched up. Also, the headlamp rim needs rechroming quite rare part believe, and lot of 1970s Guzzis have got non-original headlamps because of this. guess they're vulnerable in tumble.
In conclusion, it's really great bike. wish didn't have to sell it. It could be the basis of concours restoration, perhaps to California spec, but it's terrific bike just as it is.
It looks good, sounds good, rides good.
