1978 Husqvarna 390 AMX
This beautiful example of the 390 automatic started its life in upstate New York. Purchased with the intention of racing in scrambles and enduro events, it only saw three races before being stored for more than 39 years.
I own shop that specializes in restoring machines built in the 1970's. My shop, Texas Two Strokes, was called by an individual in Oklahoma. Sadly, the original owner passed and the motorcycle was given to his oldest son. His son recalled very detailed description of the history of the motorcycle. "On the bikes third race and fight for the 3rd position podium spot, steep downhill caused the rider to go off course and lose control. The bike fell on its side and cracked the left side case cover. Unfortunately, the raced ended as DNF and the motorcycle in need of repair." His son asked me to take on this project for his late father, and bring it back up to running order.
The bike was shipped along with few boxes of parts to my shop in Texas. As seen in the photos, it's in incredible shape. My intention was to preserve the integrity of the machine and to replace only the wearables. The left side case cover that had been cracked was replaced with new one in 1979. When it was replaced, however, the mechanic shop had probably never seen anything as unique as this Husqvarna. Some parts fell out when it was taken apart and the side cover was only loosely put together. The majority of my time with this Husky was spent sourcing expensive and difficult to source parts for the engine internals. finally found contact in Austria that was able to correspond with and acquire parts.
The engine is now in strong working order. The seat cover has been replaced. NOS drive engage cable was installed. DC plastics are now on the motorcycles. will include the aftermarket Preston Petty yellow enduro plastics that were installed when the bike was sent to me. They are from 1978 and racing number still on the front. I will also include the white number plates for the side and genuine Husqvarna handle bar cushion. These machines originally came with Bing carburetor. It is also included with the bike, but has the very popular Mikuni carb upgrade currently installed.New front sprocketNew chain
The tank is in beautiful shape with only few scratches. The pipe has no dents on the bottom side, but one penny sized one towards the left rear. Tires are original and in incredible condition. All paint on the motor and frame is factory. The rear shock and front suspension are near immaculate. We calculated based on the races for the machine to have around 10hrs on it.
The late racers wife now lives in Oklahoma. had the pleasure of taking the bike up there for them to see it and recall the great memories they had of racing on the weekends and enjoying time away from the oil and gas industry. After some tears and big hugs, they are ready for it to have new home, wherever that may be.
