1976 Moto Morini 500cc Frame number:  03957
Bologna-based Fabbrica Italiana Motocicli Morini produced post-war range of two-stroke lightweight motorcycles very much in the Italian tradition. Always interested in competition, their beautifully engineered ohv and ohc single-cylinder racers were the basis for the wholly successful lightweights with which they entered the ‘seventies.
Their completely new 1971 range was based around an entirely fresh lightweight v-twin engine unit of 344cc. The v-twin had always been seen in the larger-engined motorcycle and middleweight one was welcome change. Drawing from the company’s previous designs the new unit had, of course, overhead valves with staggered air-cooled cylinders and was initially produced in two levels of tune, Sport and Strada (Route). The former produced 40bhp and the latter 37, both bikes able to exceed 90 mph in standard trim, allied to 6-speed ‘box, very fine handling and good braking from the excellent chassis. Expensive to buy when new but soon gaining reputation as giant-killers, able to easily out-distance much more powerful rivals, they were also noted for their reliability with engines usually reaching 70,000 miles before any overhaul was needed, rather overturning the hitherto poor durability reputation of lightweights. Regular maintenance, though, was must.
An entirely different approach was adopted for the v-twins: each cylinder's two valves were pushrod-operated by single camshaft while the combustion chambers were located, not in the flat-faced cylinder heads, but in the piston crowns. In 1975 Morini announced '500' version in five-speed form, six-speed version superseding it for 1982. The 500's top speed was not that much more than the 3½'s, the biggest gain from the larger engine being greater flexibility.
The bike offered appears to be complete and perfect candidate for restoration or preservation, as it shows believed to be original 251 miles from new!!
This motorcycle was abandoned at highly accredited international transportation company by client. After years, the vehicle is being sold to recoup storage and transportation costs. The motorcycle comes with lien documentation, but no title. The process to register and title the bike is very straight forward in every state.  As the motorcycle has been sitting in warehouse for couple of years, it will need re-commissioning to return it to safe road use. However, it has good compression and is not seized in any way. It is being sold as-is, where-is, with no warranty expressed, written or implied. Although every effort is made to present accurate and reliable information, it is the responsibility of the bidder to satisfy themselves as to the condition of the motorcycle. Inspections are welcomed and encouraged. The motorcycle is located in Elizabeth, New Jersey, and available for pick up during normal office hours (M-F, 9am-4pm). Sold on Bill of Sale
