He is sometimes erroneously referred to as the inventor of the Corvette, whereas that title belongs to Harley Earl. He was also successful racing driver, taking class victories in the 1954 and 1955 24 Heures du Mans.This C3 1970 fiberglass bodied shark styled body Corvette is up for consignment and deserves serious look. With this car sporting the convertible, as well as the LT-1 option, we are looking at mere 1,287 with these options, possibly lower taking into account the color which this number does not reflect. Call it high performance small block much like welterweight fighter, quick, powerful, reasonably light, highly durable, and brutally effective.Exterior
This shark with its chromed bumpers and lower chromed egg crate grille is in the sweet spot of the C3 years. Just prior to the performance killing EPA emissions add ons, and still enjoying chrome, the remainder of the body in fiberglass is Corvette Bronze. It's close to original color respray, and there are some slight areas which can be noted in the photos where the body has moved bit and caused cracks, areas of overzealous spray creating bubbles, and one space upfront that has few small waves in the fiberglass. The paint remains shiny though and presents overall in good condition. Badged as "Stingray" complete with front quarter "gills", chromed mirror on the door, chromed window surrounds, and the dual rear bumpers split for the license plate, all chrome is in good condition. The black canvas convertible top is tear free and the rear plastic window is slightly fogged due to age. There is body matching hardtop that comes with this car for all season motoring. 15-inch rally wheels are all around with deep dish trim rings and good rubber wrapping them. Bringing up the rear are rectangular chromed tailpipe covers which work their way through the bodywork at the rear roll panel.Interior
A swing of the sculpted doors and we see Saddle (tan if you will) styled door panels which present nicely with just few chips off on the trim below the door armrest. Inside are buckets with Saddle vinyl, and textured insert with smooth exterior bolster. Racing to the front of the car from the back of the passenger compartment is Saddle vinyl center console. Here we note the handbrake, shift lever, and climate control dials and sliding fan speed levers. Moving upward an original AM/FM radio and just above series of essential round gauges and warning lights that serves as your monitoring station as you jet along the highway. Behind the buckets is large carpeted storage area in gold carpet well preserved as is the carpeting under the passenger's feet.Drivetrain
Truthfully, somewhat overshadowing the LT-1 engine this year was the debut of the 454ci LS5, boasting claimed 390 horsepower. However, the big block was way cheaper option at $289.65 versus the LT-1's $447.65 premium, and with the pizzazz offered by the biggest engine ever to grace Corvette, it's little surprise that the LS5 outsold the LT-1 by nearly 3.5 to 1. (However, today, the LT1 beats the LS5 in value.) And this car has correct CTR coded 350ci V8 LT-1 complete with the correct Holley 4-barrel carb and correct LT-1 intake manifold. non-original Muncie speed manual transmission is now on board and this throws power rearward to CFB-4.11 posi-traction HD rear axle.Undercarriage
Underneath is very well preserved with just slight surface rust on some of the metal parts, but solid steel and fiberglass mounted to it. C3 suspension all around and power discs for all corners. clean dual exhaust snakes its way rearward from the mill.Drive-Ability
Top down and as Commander Cody said "With 4.11 gears you can really get lost..." this car promotes more stoplight challenges than running calm interstate. All was well though for the test drive with great acceleration with that 1970's sound, smooth ride, good handling and straight bias free braking. The pre electronic all control cars offer up feel on the wheel that is unmatched. Kind of down and dirty driving.With 1970 being the highest output for the LT-1 at 370hp, latter models succumbing to lesser due to the EPA (TYVM) this remains desirable car. Good paint on the respray, nice Saddle vinyl interior and 4-speed with the convertible and hardtop options you will be the belle of the ball when you show up to the club in this classic.
