“A daily driver that has the potential to be a stunning example with basic mechanics. Small hole behind the rear mud flap, easily accessible and easily repairable. The pinion bearing in the differential is audible but I've done 5,000km without a problem. The diff oil has been replaced but at some point the diff will either need an overhaul or a second hand replacement fitting. Diffs can go for years like this but i would sort it if i was keeping it. My mechanic has recommended that it will need track rod ends too.”
Regrettable sale of my W123 280E due to moving back to the UK. Ive had few of these cars so know them well. If you're familiar with them you'll know they're pretty bulletproof and provide great daily driver and sound investment into the classic car market. Ive had this for just over year and enjoyed getting it to the stage where can jump in and go anywhere. I don't have any photos of the interior to hand, but the seats and trim are cream, seats are vinyl/leather type. Good Points: Engine and box strong, pulls like horse (new rotor arm and distributor)Bodywork solid, jacking points and underneath solid although small rust patch as shown in photoInterior cleanTyres goodChrome fineRecent Air-Con Service Bad Points: Central locking doesn't work (common on these usually leak in the vacuum system)Diff is noisy, has been since had it and is obvious the pinion bearing needs replacing. It has never bothered the performance and would go many thousands of K's like this but is just something I've never got round to doing. (Diff overhaul or second hand diff required but has had an oil change to ensure proper lubrication)Mechanic has advised that track rod ends will need replacing in the not too distant future All in all this is solid vehicle. As far as I'm aware the faults are basic and can be addressed with basic mechanical knowledge.
